Masterpieces of Medical Photography: Selections from the Burns Archive edited by Joel-Peter Witkin
For this volume Joel-Peter Witkin has selected photographs from the Burns Archive of Historical Medical Photographs and Dr. Stanley Burns, founder of the archive, has contributed descriptive captions for the photographs. These images are primarily form the nineteenth century and begin with post Civil War documentation of physicians working with wounded survivors of that conflict. Witkin’s selection goes beyond the primary function of the photographs, which was documentary, to sort out those few examples that embody the pathos, dignity, beauty and terror of this remarkable development in the use of the camera.
